Discover Udawalawe National Park
Sri Lanka’s Best Place to See Wild Elephants

Udawalawe National Park is one of Sri Lanka’s premier wildlife destinations and is widely regarded as the best place in the country to see wild Asian elephants. Covering more than 30,000 hectares, the park is home to hundreds of elephants, water buffalo, crocodiles, deer and an incredible variety of birdlife. Thanks to its open grasslands and large reservoir, wildlife is easy to spot, making Udawalawe one of the best safari experiences in Asia.
Where is Udawalawe National Park?
Udawalawe National Park is located in southern Sri Lanka, approximately 165 kilometres from Colombo and around 170 kilometres from Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB). The journey takes approximately 3.5 to 4 hours by car. The park is ideally located between Sri Lanka’s south coast and hill country, making it easy to combine with nearby destinations such as Ella, Tangalle, Mirissa, Yala National Park and Haputale.
Experience an Unforgettable Elephant Safari
Udawalawe is best known for its large population of wild Asian elephants. Unlike many other national parks, elephants can be seen here throughout the year, with sightings almost guaranteed during a safari. Visitors often see entire families roaming freely across the grasslands, feeding near the reservoir or bathing in natural waterholes. Watching these magnificent animals in their natural habitat is one of Sri Lanka’s most memorable wildlife experiences.
Discover Incredible Wildlife
Although elephants are the main attraction, Udawalawe is home to an impressive variety of wildlife. During a safari, you may also spot:
-
Water buffalo
-
Spotted deer
-
Sambar deer
-
Wild boar
-
Jackals
-
Crocodiles
-
Monitor lizards
-
Grey langur monkeys
-
Toque macaques
The park is also home to the elusive Sri Lankan leopard, although sightings are much less common than in Yala National Park.
A Paradise for Birdwatchers
Udawalawe is one of Sri Lanka’s top birdwatching destinations. More than 200 bird species have been recorded, including:
-
Crested serpent eagles
-
White-bellied sea eagles
-
Painted storks
-
Pelicans
-
Kingfishers
-
Bee-eaters
-
Peacocks
-
Hornbills
The park’s wetlands and reservoir attract both resident and migratory birds throughout the year.
Visit the Elephant Transit Home
Located close to the park entrance is the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home, one of Sri Lanka’s leading elephant conservation centres. Unlike traditional elephant attractions, the centre focuses on rescuing and rehabilitating orphaned elephant calves before releasing them back into the wild. Visitors can observe the scheduled feeding sessions from a viewing area while learning about the important conservation work being carried out. As there is no direct contact between visitors and the elephants, it provides an educational and ethical wildlife experience that supports elephant welfare.
Explore Udawalawe Reservoir
The vast Udawalawe Reservoir lies at the heart of the national park and attracts wildlife throughout the day. The open landscape surrounding the water makes it one of the easiest places to observe elephants, birds and other animals while enjoying spectacular views across the surrounding countryside.
The Best Time to Visit
Udawalawe can be visited throughout the year thanks to its dry climate and excellent wildlife viewing conditions. Early morning and late afternoon safaris offer the best opportunities to see active wildlife while avoiding the midday heat.
