Discover Nuwara Eliya
Sri Lanka’s Little England

Nuwara Eliya is one of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful and unique destinations. Nestled high in the central highlands, this charming colonial town is famous for its cool climate, rolling tea plantations, colourful flower gardens and stunning mountain scenery. Often referred to as “Little England”, Nuwara Eliya still retains much of its British colonial character, with elegant buildings, picturesque parks and traditional country houses creating an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Sri Lanka.
Where is Nuwara Eliya?
Nuwara Eliya is located approximately 170 kilometres east of Colombo and around 160 kilometres from Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB). It sits at an elevation of around 1,868 metres (6,128 feet) above sea level, making it the highest town in Sri Lanka. Its central location makes it an excellent base for exploring Sri Lanka’s hill country, with Ella, Hatton, Horton Plains National Park, Haputale and Kandy all within easy reach.
How to Get to Nuwara Eliya
There are several ways to reach Nuwara Eliya, each offering spectacular scenery.
-
By Car: The journey from Colombo takes around 4.5 to 5.5 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions.
-
By Train: There is no railway station in Nuwara Eliya itself. Visitors travel on the famous Kandy to Ella railway line, getting off at Nanu Oya Railway Station, which is approximately 9 kilometres from the town centre.
