Kalutara is a city in Sri Lanka that is found in the southern west region of the island. With a community of 39,700. Kalutara city is ruled by the western province.

Kalutara is located on the A2 highway connecting Colombo, via Galle through to Matara.

Tell people you’re progressing to travel to Kalutara and if they grasp Sri Lanka. They might mention the town’s main claim to fame that is that the “mangosteen”. A slice of this luscious purple fruit with juicy white flesh isn’t to be missed.  Particularly if it’s washed down with a glass of arrak, a local alcoholic drink made from sweet, milky coconut blossom.

There are two railway stations. The town has many different kinds of seafood restaurants. Kalutara Viharaya, Kalutara Bodhiya, Richmond Castle, Calido beach & Asokaramaya Buddhist Temple are some of the historical places where travellers can spend their time taking photos and learning about the history of Sri Lanka.

There are plenty of things to do in Kalutara. River safaris on “Madu Ganga” are very popular. Take a trip to the local fish market. You can travel to Galle Dutch fort, stay active with the water sports centre in nearby Bentota.
