Unawatuna

Unawatuna

Unawatuna is a coastal town in Galle district of Sri Lanka famous for its beautiful beach and corals.

Off the coast of Unawatuna, beneath the Indian Ocean lies a number of coral reefs, shipwrecks  and a great variety of fish and turtles.

The turtles still wade onto the shore to dig their nests and lay their eggs. Sometimes they even go right in front of  the beach restaurants.

Unawatuna Beach was named the world’s best beach by The Discovery Channel in 2004.

That may be a stretch today, but Unawatuna is undoubtedly the best beach in Sri Lanka. None other offers the same combination of golden sand. A protected bay that offers the country’s best swimming, the famed beauty of the headland with its temple and sunset, and the laid back atmosphere of Unawatuna.

Travelling from Colombo downtown to Galle and Unawatuna. Catch the Matara-train (with ocean-view) and jump off at Galle (takes almost three hours, 220 rps) and take either a tuk-tuk (400 rps) or local bus (21 rps) from Galle to Unawatuna. Recommended from Colombo downtown to Galle are aircon mini-buses that take three hours as well (350 rps).
